The Common fig (Ficus carica) is a large, deciduous shrub or small tree native to southwest Asia and the eastern Mediterranean region (from Greece to Turkey). It grows to a height of 6.9-10 metres (23-33ft) tall, with smooth grey bark. The leaves are 12-25 centimetres (4.7-9.8 in) long and 10-18 centimetres (3.9-7.1 in) across, and deeply lobed with three or five lobes. The fruit is 3-5 centimetres (1.2-2.0 in) long, with a green skin, sometimes ripening towards purple or brown. The sap of the tree's green parts is an irritant to human skin. Figs are a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps to control blood pressure. Since many people not only do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, but do consume high amounts of sodium as salt is frequently added to processed foods, they may be deficient in potassium. Low intake of potassium-rich foods, especially when coupled with a high intake of sodium, can lead to hypertension. Figs are a good source of dietary fibre, which may have a positive effect on weight management. Figs are a fruit source of calcium (79mg per 250g), a mineral that has many functions including promoting bone density. Also, figs' potassium may counteract the increased urinary calcium loss caused by the high-salt diets typical of most Westerners, thus helping to further prevent bones from thinning out at a fast rate.

Ginger is a spice which is used for cooking and is also consumed whole as a delicacy or medicine. It is the underground stem of the ginger plant, Zingiber officinale. The ginger plant has a long history of cultivation, having originated in Asia and is grown in India, Southeast Asia, West Africa and the Caribbean. Young ginger rhizomes are juicy and fleshy with a very mild taste. They are often pickled in vinegar or sherry as a snack or just cooked as an ingredient in many dishes. They can also be stewed in boiling water to make ginger tea, to which honey is often added as a sweetener; sliced orange or lemon fruit may also be added. Mature ginger roots are fibrous and nearly dry. The juice from old ginger roots is extremely potent and is often used as a spice in Indian recipes and Chinese cuisine. Powdered dry ginger root (ginger powder) is typically used to spice gingerbread and other recipes. Fresh ginger can be substituted for ground ginger at a ratio of 6 parts fresh for 1 part ground, although the flavours of fresh and dried ginger are not exactly interchangeable. Fresh ginger should be peeled before eaten. For storage, the ginger should be wrapped tightly in a towel and placed in a plastic bag, and can be kept for about three weeks in a refrigerator and up to three months in a freezer.

Wolfberry -commercially called goji berry - is the common name for the fruit of two very closely related species: Lycium barbarum (pinyin: Ningxia gouqi) and L. chinense (pinyin: gouqi), two species of boxthorn in the family Solanaceae (which also includes the potato, tomato, aubergine, deadly nightshade, chili pepper, and tobacco). It is native to southeastern Europe and Asia. It is also known as Chinese wolfberry, goji berry, mede berry, barbary matrimony vine, bocksdorn, Duke of Argyll's tea tree, Murali (in India), red medlar or matrimony vine. Unrelated to the plant's geographic origin, the names Tibetan goji and Himalayan goji are in common use in the health food market for products from this plant. Goji Berries are reported to contain 18 Amino acids (six times higher than bee pollen), more Beta Carotene than carrots, more Iron than spinach, and 21 Trace Minerals. Goji Berries also contain Vitamin B1, B2, B6, and Vitamin E (rarely found in fruits). Goji berries are 13% protein! The Goji Berry also contains extremely high levels of antioxidants. It is possibly the highest antioxidant food on earth.

Haricot beans are small dry white beans which are a staple in baked bean dishes along with soups and chilis. When people think of beans, some think of haricots, as they are rather ubiquitous. Many markets sell haricots, and they can also be grown at home, if you have enough room in your garden for beans. Haricots have a high carb count but a much lower "net carb" or "digestible carb" content. They contain several vitamins and minerals. They are a good source of dietary fibre, which has a number of health benefits. For example, fibre helps protect against digestive disorders and disease. According to at least one clinical diet study, an eating-plan rich in beans can help patients with either type 2 or type 1 diabetes to reduce their daily insulin intake. Healthy low-carb diets typically recommend beans in later phases of the diet plan. Due to their high soluble fibre content (inc. gums, beta glucans, pectin), legumes are digested very slowly, are thus low on the glycaemic index, and help maintain stable blood glucose levels and healthier glucose metabolism. Eating more beans helps to reduce the effect of high glycaemic index foods by lowering the glycaemic value of meals. In addition to providing a source of food, beans are also nitrogen fixers, so they will enrich the soil that they are planted in.

The hazelnut can provide very important nutritional value in a well-balanced diet, and has several important health benefits in protecting against diseases. Having a special combination of oil (especially oleic acid rich oil structure), proteins, carbohydrate, beta-sitosterol, essential vitamins and minerals, giving hazelnut a special place among other nuts for its unique ability to protect against diseases. Hazelnut and hazelnut oil is the best known source for Vitamin E which is essential for the healthy heart muscles and other muscles of the body as well. Indeed 25-30g of hazelnuts a day is enough for daily vitamin E needs and a very good way of protecting against heart-vein diseases and cancer. Vitamin E is also necessary for normal functioning of the reproduction system. Vitamin E prevents the disintegration of red blood cells, thus it serves as a protection against deficiency of blood which is called anemia. Another benefit of Vitamin E found in hazelnut is to prevent the factors which prepare the basis for cancer disease. If cancer is already formed in the body, then it fights to defuse the harmful cells. Beta-sitosterol, which is found in ample amountd in hazelnut, is an important means of decreasing cholesterol and preventing breast cancer and prostate cancer.
